1-7 Figure 1-2.—Locating the sternum. There is a small piece of cartilage at the lower end of the sternum (figure 1-2). A fracture of this area can damage the liver, causing hemorrhage (heavy bleeding) and death. When you place the heels of your hands on the victim's chest, make sure they are above the tip of the sternum. Place the heel of one hand directly on the sternum and the heel of the other on top of the first. Figure 1-3, view A, shows this technique. Interlock your fingers and keep them off the victim's chest! Figure 1-3.—Position for cardiac compression.
